Snowmobile Trail Conditions

The latest DNR report on the CJ Ramstad/North Shore State Trail:

Trail snow conditions for: C.J. Ramstad/North Shore State Trail

Comment details: (updated January 7, 2016)
The trail has been packed & groomed this week from Duluth to Grand Marais. The trail is slated to be groomed again on both Friday & Saturday night. There is between a 1-4″ base from Duluth to the Alger Parking Lot near Two Harbors & between a 3-5” base from the Alger Lot to Grand Marais. Trailering to one of the parking lots along the trail is advised due to variable snow cover near the shore. Please be aware of snow covered brush & branches hanging over the trail. There could be water flowing under the snow in some areas & lakes, swamps, rivers & creeks aren’t completely frozen. If you do go riding, please use extreme caution, watch for trail crews & be aware that trails conditions will vary.

While the local access trails are still being worked on, (they are rideable) reports are positive on the condition of the CJ Ramstad/North Shore State Trail.

Some of our guests are choosing to ride direct from the hotel while others are trailering to the parking lot on Hwy. 2 for direct access to the State Trail.

From the Lake County News Chronicle:

“The state trail is doing a great job, it is basically the only place to ride in the Midwest,” Eide said.

Russell echoed Eide’s thoughts, saying riders were coming to the trail from not just other places in Minnesota, but also from Wisconsin and Michigan’s upper peninsula.

“Snowmobiler’s are out in full force,” commissioner Rick Goutermont said. “The North Shore trail is in beautiful condition and it has access to the communities that we need.”
