The weather is starting to warm up and the snow is finally melting. So, now is the perfect time to begin planning your trip to Two Harbors, MN for an adventurous getaway. Spring Break is coming up fast and if you’re still trying to plan the perfect trip up the north shore, then we have some tips for you to check out!
1. Spring hiking tips
While spring is one of our favorite seasons in northern Minnesota, it is well known for being unpredictable. So, if you’re planning on hitting the trails while you’re visiting us, then we highly recommend checking out these tips to ensure you’re prepared:
- Make sure you’re aware of the trail conditions
- Avoid trails after heavy rain
- Wear waterproof boots or gaiters so you can walk straight through the muddy spots
- Wear layers of clothing and waterproof jackets for rain, cold weather, and removing when it gets warm
- Be prepared for higher water levels
- Remember to apply sunscreen
Be sure to clean off your boots, gear, pets, and vehicles in order to prevent the spread of invasive species after you’re done!
2. Best places to visit in March and April
With the conditions getting less and less snowy every day, there are several spots we recommend checking out during the milder conditions of the spring. Some of these include Gooseberry Falls State Park, Split Rock Lighthouse and State Park, the Hellacious Overlook/Palisade Head, Stoney Point, Black Beach, and Agate Bay Beach. Check out this link for more information!
You can also begin to wander a little more freely around our historic town now that the conditions are no longer that of harsh winter. The Two Harbors Lighthouse and Museum make an interesting stop, especially if you consider yourself a history buff. There are also several shops and restaurants that locals and visitors both love to stop at regularly.
3. What we recommend packing
We want you to enjoy your trip to Two Harbors, MN, and that means packing clothes for the weather. Even though it’s basically spring, we’re still quite close to winter. So, it’s always a good rule of thumb to pack for both seasons. This includes things like:
- Warm jackets
- Rain jackets
- Warm sweatshirts
- Lightweight sweaters
- Rains boots and tennis shoes
- Warm socks
- Sunscreen
- Warm hats, gloves/mittens, and scarves
- Sunglasses and/or visored hats
Make sure you pack more than you need in case you’re caught in a rain shower or go through more pairs of socks than you were initially planning!
4. Things to keep in mind
In addition to everything we have listed above, there are a few other things to keep in mind when planning a trip up the north shore during the spring. While we love spring up here, it’s important to remember that it can still be quite cold and particularly wet. While it’s not a tropical vacation to a Caribbean island, it does have its perks such as far fewer tourists than in the summer seasons and warmer temperatures without sweltering heat.
Additionally, we want to ensure you have a great time above all else! That means remembering to take in the beauty of the changing seasons and the transition from winter dormancy into the rebirth that comes with spring. Spring is a spectacular time to head up the north shore and we’re certain you’ll find a little something for everyone to enjoy!
